If a tree falls in a forest and there is no-one there, does it make a sound?
Trees are inherantly lazy, as can be deduced by their tendency to not move, therefore, why would they bother making unneccesary noise? Not just to see if it can draw attention to itself - when did you last see an attention seeking tree? They tend to be, by nature, fairly modest when compared to other flowering plants such as the daisy that screams "make me into chains! Put me in your hair" at passers by. Why else would any noise be made? Possibly an extra health-and-safety conscious tree may be inclined to announce to the world that it is falling in case the appearence that no-one was listening or there to hear it was a lapse of concentration or based on misinformation. Maybe the tree feels that it must follow H&S protocols as a matter of course like a good tree. However, on balance I would say the sloth rating of the average tree would invalidate this argument. After all, it is unnecessary for most of us to shout "tiger" at random intervals in case it so happens to be true. So I would conclude that a falling tree would not be bothered to make a sound if there was noone there to appreciate it.

question?
Does the question, "If a tree falls in the forest...." refure to the fact that sound can only exists if a person hears it. Or is it asking does it create pressure pattens in the air that are in the range of an averarge human ear. Or is the quetion asking, do trees scream?
A more importan question would be what is the examiner looking for in an answer or, failing that, how many marks is it worth?
Just pondering alowed, another question. Is it still the same tree if it's been turned into MDF?

There is a collection of trees present in MDF - they have just been highly compressed and glued together.
Pressure patterns in the air? Oh spot the engineer...

I wonder if these questions can all be answered by the word "maybe?"
